I/O Magic MagicWriter DR-CDRW2440
WHAT'S HOT: I/O Magic's MagicWriter is the same mechanism as the one in the Lite-On LTR-24102B drive. While the two drives had the same CD-RW write speeds and nearly identical audio extraction speeds, the I/O Magic drive achieved slightly higher CD-R write speeds: The I/O Magic drive copied a 650MB image to CD-R in 4 minutes, 1 second, while the Lite-On drive took 4 minutes and 27 seconds (11 percent longer) to do the same task. Writing a 650MB folder also went more quickly with the MagicWriter.
WHAT'S NOT: The documentation is thin, offering only step-by-step instructions and troubleshooting. I/O Magic provides nine hours of weekday-only technical support, and there's no toll-free number.
WHAT ELSE: The drive comes with Ahead Nero Burning ROM 5.5 and InCD 2.2 software. Like most CD-RW drives on the market, it also includes a headphone jack and volume dial.
UPSHOT: If you don't need much in the way of documentation, this speedy drive offers excellent performance.
