Corel Intros $799 Web Server

Paperback-sized NetWinder WS runs Linux and Apache Web server.

Corel Computer this week started shipping the NetWinder WS, a low-cost Web server designed for small businesses or even home users who want to set up a basic Web site. An extension of the company's NetWinder network computer design, the NetWinder WS runs the Linux operating system (Red Hat 4.2 with Corel enhancements), the popular Apache Web server (version 1.2.6), and a suite of site configuration tools.

Based around the 275 MHz StrongARM processor developed by Digital Equipment, the NetWinder WS is the size of a paperback and includes a keyboard and a mouse. The base model comes with 32MB of memory and an 810MB hard drive. Drive options of 2.1, 3.1, and 4.2GB are also available, as is a memory upgrade to 64MB. You decide which you want at purchase time, since the NetWinder WS is a sealed box.

Unlike the plug-and-play web appliances (see link at right) that connect only to a network, the NetWinder WS can be used as a stand-alone Web server or can be connected to a network via its 10/100-mbps network ports. You'll need a network connection if you want to install new applications or upgrade the software, since it has neither a floppy disk nor CD-ROM drives. To set it up as a basic stand-alone Web server requires a modem, a fixed IP address from your ISP, and a full-time connection. More sophisticated connections need a router. The device can also be used as an intranet server. Corel says the NetWinder WS can handle up to 150 concurrent connections.

According to the company, the NetWinder WS can be up and running in minutes, using a wizard-based setup for entering basic information such as IP addresses and access rights. Additional setup is done using a Web browser.

You can purchase the NetWinder WS directly from the Corel Web site. Additionally, Corel is working with not-yet-named ISPs who will sell the system to their customers as a complete Web server package. Corel's also counting on the burgeoning numbers of cable modem users as a new customer base for low-cost Web servers.

Intriguing, as-yet-unused, connections on the back panel of the NetWinder WS hint at future applications. There are audio line-in/line-out connections, a telephone handset connection, and standard video in/out connectors. Corel says future software upgrades to the NetWinder WS may offer additional features, such as voice over IP and television/cable integration.
