FileMaker Makeover

FileMaker Pro 4.1

Attention Microsoft Access users: You may finally have an alternative--FileMaker Pro 4.1. Three years ago FileMaker added some (but not full) relational capabilities along with a Microsoft Excel filter. Now FileMaker 4.1 has finally become a genuine database manager, adding much-needed support for ODBC and SQL. These two protocols enable FileMaker to import standard corporate database formats such as Access and Oracle, and to export to standard desktop databases. I tested a beta copy and easily imported and exported in DBF format. Overall, the new import/export capabilities are the program's primary improvement.

SUMMARY

$199, $149 for registered FileMaker or Access users.
