PC Reliability & Service: Who Can You Trust?

Did your new PC get delivered DOA? Or did it boot up without a hitch? Was customer service unresponsive? Or did you get quick attention from competent support reps? Only a handful of PC manufacturers sell dependable systems and provide effective service and support. Our in-depth survey of more than 6800 PC World readers tells the real story behind the companies that make your business, home, and notebook PCs.

Here's a wild guess: You use more than one PC. Perhaps you have one at work and another at home. You might even use a notebook when you're somewhere in between. Each system is different. Your notebook may have more problems than your office machine. And it's certainly easier to get support for your work PC than for your home system--even if they're made by the same company. Wouldn't it be great if you could find the most dependable hardware and the best support no matter where you use your PC?

We thought so too. That's why we've made a radical change in the way we gauge the PC reliability and service of major computer vendors. For the first time in our ongoing survey, we took the information that readers give us about their PCs and split it into three groups, depending on the type of system they told us about. The three groups are: work PCs, home computers, and notebooks. We then identified the best and worst manufacturers in each group.

The big news? The companies that make the best work PCs aren't necessarily the best choice for your home office or for the road. Still, there are a handful of companies that build dependable systems across the board--and support them as if their corporate lives depended on it.
