NEC-Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 73

WHAT'S HOT: The 17-inch NEC-Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 73 CRT display has a flat screen, courtesy of its Diamondtron NF flat tube--it's specifically designed to reduce the annoying line distortion and ambient-light glare typical of older or cheaper curved-screen tubes.
WHAT'S NOT: We see the Diamondtron NF tube used in lots of our Top 10 Monitors, but it did not help the Diamond Plus 73 earn a spot. Text and icons looked blurry in our sample word processing documents and spreadsheets. Colors on a Web page appeared murky, lacking the richness and intensity of the colors displayed by other monitors in our tests.
WHAT ELSE: On-screen controls are managed by three buttons on the bezel. Individual controls are listed with only icons, but NEC-Mitsubishi's usual well-organized, easy-to-follow manual provides helpful explanations of each control, as well as instructions on how to make changes. It also lists troubleshooting tips.
UPSHOT: Assuming the image quality of our sample Diamond Plus 73 is representative, we'd suggest looking elsewhere.
