Netscape Acquires Community Directory Project

NewHoo directory includes more than 100,000 Web sites classified in more than 24,000 different interest categories.

Netscape Communications Corporation said Wednesday that it has acquired the NewHoo Community Directory Project, and will use it to create a new portal Internet directory service called Netscape Open Directory.

Netscape did not disclose any financial details of the transaction.

The NewHoo directory includes more than 100,000 Web sites, classified in more than 24,000 different interest categories such as business, science, and sports, according to a statement from Netscape. The directory project uses more than 4500 editors around the world, it said.

The Open Directory will be made available through mozilla.org, the company said, and volunteers interested in using or improving the service can get more information from the link at the right. Netscape said it will offer a special license, similar to the Mozilla.org open source-code development license, for users to get copies of the directory that they can crawl, archive, and reuse on their machines.
