Symantec Revamps Norton SystemWorks

CleanSweep and a Y2K tool join the popular utility suite.

Symantec is revamping Monday its Norton SystemWorks suite for Windows 95 and 98 to include several new utilities, and releasing a professional edition with additional programs.

Norton CleanSweep, which Symantec acquired when it bought Quarterdeck, will replace Remove It in the SystemWorks Standard Edition. Symantec is also adding CrashGuard 4.0, a system crash protection and recovery program. The SystemWorks price drops to $69.95 from $99.95 with this release. Registered users may upgrade for $9.95.

The suite also includes Norton AntiVirus 5.0, Norton Utilities 3.0, and a six-month subscription to Norton Web Services.

The SystemWorks Professional Edition, also being updated Monday, now includes Norton 2000, which assesses and corrects potential Y2K problems, and Norton Ghost, for cloning hard disk drives. The $99.95 Professional Edition includes all the programs in the Standard Edition.

Bonus packs of additional utilities come with each edition of SystemWorks. Both editions include Norton Mobile Essentials, Visual Page, WinFax Basic, Norton Secret Stuff, and pcAnywhere Express. The Standard Edition bonus pack also contains Norton 2000 BIOS Test & Fix, another Year 2000 utility.

In both versions, the programs are integrated, not just bundled. Users can install them in one operation and use a single manual.
