WHAT'S HOT: LG Electronics may be a late entry to the 24X market, but no matter--this drive is the only 24X model we've seen to crack the 4-minute barrier on both of our CD-R write tests. It took 3 minutes, 56 seconds to transfer our 650MB folder of files to CD-R, and 3 minutes, 58 seconds to write that folder to CD-R on the fly. However, the new 32X drives can do the same task in as little as three minutes, 36 seconds.
WHAT'S NOT: At 1 minute, 28 seconds to write 100MB of data to CD-RW, the drive's packet-writing performance is about 10 seconds off of the average for 10X-rated drives, and 20 seconds behind the fastest drives. The software bundle includes the basics only.
WHAT ELSE: The drive ranks in the upper third of drives we've tested on its CD-ROM read performance. LG bundles Roxio's Easy CD Creator 5.1 and DirectCD 5.1 (for CD mastering and packet writing tasks, respectively). LG backs the drive with an industry-standard one-year warranty.
UPSHOT: This affordable drive is the fastest 24X/10X/40X model we've seen.
