New Clies Boast Swivel Screen, Thumbpad

Sony's latest PDAs have an innovative design that lets you flip the screen to cover or reveal a miniature keyboard.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Sony Corporation brought two of its newest Palm OS-based Clie handheld computers to the United States Wednesday, each possessing a distinctive clamshell design and an integrated thumbpad.

Sony, based in Tokyo, showed its PEG-NR70V and PEG-NR70 PDAs in Japan earlier this month and has now brought them to the U.S. market.

Unlike most PDAs, the new Clies have a clamshell design in which two parts are hinged together: a base that includes control buttons and a QWERTY thumbpad, and a display that can be flipped around. Users can close the device for carrying, and they can flip the screen around and use the Clie like a traditional PDA, with the thumbpad covered up.

Camera Included

Both models come with a 320-by-480-pixel, 3.8-inch LCD and include a built-in MP3 player. The higher-end PEG-NR70V also contains a digital camera.

The PDAs run version 4.1 of the Palm OS and Motorola's 66-MHz Dragonball Super VZ processor.

The PEG-NR70V carries a list price of $599, and the PEG-NR70 costs $499. Customers can order the devices now on Sony's Web site, or they can purchase them from retailers beginning in May, according to a company statement.
