Dave's Favorites: Unlimited Photography With FotoShow
While they're a lot cheaper than they used to be, the fact remains that buying a pocketful of CompactFlash or SmartMedia cards for a vacation is downright expensive. But what alternative do you have? You don't want to be halfway up the Eiffel Tower when you discover that your digital camera has just two shots left on it (trust me--it's a long walk back down).
Iomega's FotoShow is a portable storage system about the size of a PDA that lets you transfer images from your digital camera to Zip cartridges. The FotoShow drive holds a Zip 100MB or 250MB Zip cartridge and has slots for both CompactFlash and SmartMedia cards. It comes with an AC adapter, though you can buy a car adapter for mobile operation.
The ability to transfer images from pricey memory cards to less-expensive Zip cartridges is a great feature in itself, but FotoShow does a lot more. It connects to your television, and it has image editing software on board that lets you crop, remove red eye, add titles, and then display the finished product as part of a video slide show. You can also use your FotoShow as a USB 1.1 Zip drive for your computer. But as with all 250MB Zip drives, you'll probably want to stick with 250MB disks: Although the drive will read 100MB disks quickly, writing large amounts of data on them can be painfully slow.
You can find FotoShow for about $150 with PCWorld.com's Product Finder.
