AT&T mMode Sends a Message

AOL will provide e-mail and instant messaging for AT&T Wireless' new high-speed service.

AT&T Wireless Services has linked its new mMode high-speed wireless data service with America Online, the companies said Tuesday.

AOL's e-mail and Instant Messenger services will be available through mMode.

AT&T mMode subscribers will be able to retrieve and respond to AOL e-mail using an mMode-enabled cell phone, and will be able to send and receive instant messages on the AOL Instant Messenger network as well.

AOL members will have access to their e-mail address book and instant messenger buddy list through mMode.

Subscribers to AOL Instant Messenger send more than 1.3 billion instant messages each day, AOL says in the release.

High-Speed Service

AT&T launched mMode one week ago in a dozen markets in the U.S.

The General Packet Radio Service consumer service for mobile phones allows high-speed data transfers to and from wireless handsets.

The service is modeled on the popular I-mode wireless service offered by Japanese mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo, an investor in AT&T Wireless, which is based in Redmond, Washington.
