3Com Announces Two New Palm PCs
Palm V, IIIx use light background for greater readability.
The display on both the Palm IIIx and Palm V has higher contrast than existing models. They use a light background rather than the current dark-green hue. It should answer users' calls for improved readability.
"Color is not too important, but a better display is," said Phil Pucci, a systems engineer at Geolinks, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Software differences between the two new units are minimal. The Palm V device adds a contrast-control button and a pull-down menu for modem controls for 27 countries.
Both 3Com units will also add the choice of synchronizing with Microsoft's Outlook during installation.
The Palm IIIx device, at 6 ounces, is priced at $369. It includes access to the connector slot to enable a pager card or memory upgrade, and 4MB of memory.
The Palm V, priced at $449, weighs only 4 ounces and is almost half as thick at 0.4 inches. The unit achieves its svelte form by using thinner lithium-ion batteries instead of Triple AAA. The Palm V device has 2MB of RAM and a recharging cradle. A $169 3Com 33.6K bit/sec modem clips on to the back of the unit.
