Handspring Treo Gets the E-Mail Message

New applications allow both home and business users to access their e-mail accounts wirelessly.

Handspring unveiled two e-mail programs for its Treo communicator multipurpose personal digital assistant Monday, determined not to stay out of the loop in the growing wireless e-mail market.

Treo Mail Internet Edition is aimed at customers using POP3 e-mail accounts accessible through the Internet. Treo Mail Corporate Desktop Edition is targeted at enterprise users who need to access their Microsoft Outlook, Exchange, or POP3 e-mail from behind a firewall.

The e-mail programs round out the list of features now touted by the combination PDA and cell phone, which was launched with much fanfare earlier this year.

Free Trial

The Internet Edition is priced at $50 for a one-year subscription, while the Corporate Edition is priced at $100 for a year. Users can sample both versions through a 30-day free trial by downloading the software from Handspring.

The e-mail service subscription fees are in addition to the extra airtime minutes mobile phone service providers may charge users.

Treo e-mail is powered by wireless service provider Visto and is optimized for the Treo communicator, allowing users to program one-button e-mail access and select a range of delivery options, Handspring says.

The mail services are compatible with the Treo 180 and 180g, as well as the forthcoming color Treo 270 communicator, acccording to the Mountain View, California, handheld maker.
