Dell's much-awaited Latitude XT tablet PC is ready to ship in the U.S., according to a document posted on the company's Web site.
The new laptop, loaded with the latest storage, networking and display features, was declared ready-to-ship on Dec. 3 in the U.S., according to the document in a compressed training manual on Dell's Web site. Dell did not respond to a request for comment about the PC and its availability.
Documents in the manual also list the laptop's specifications. The laptop, powered by Intel Core 2 Duo Ultra Low Voltage 1.2Ghz chip, will come with a 12.1-inch display, which can be flipped to convert to the laptop to a Tablet PC. Dell will provide the option of selecting either a regular LCD (liquid crystal display) or an LED (light emitting diode) display.
WiMax capabilities included in the laptop will provide wireless WAN (wide area network) communication capabilities, according to the document. A separate antenna component, that attaches to the external panel on the laptop, enables an internal WiMax card to function. Other wireless capabilities include an optional internal wireless a/b/g/n card and Bluetooth support. The system also has a Gigabit Ethernet controller.
In addition to a hard drive, users will have the option to add a 32G-byte or 64G-byte solid-state storage drive.
It will come with 1G byte of DDR2 on-board memory and have memory modules supporting up to 2G bytes of DDR2 RAM. With a 4-cell battery, the system will weigh up to 1.8 kilograms or 4 pounds, according to the documents.
The system will ship with the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate OSes. In China, it will ship with the Red Flag Linux OS.
The laptops are ready to ship in North America, South America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Japan and China, the document said.
"The product is designed specifically for the education, health care and corporate market place," said Jeff Clarke, senior vice president and general manager of Dell's business product group in a video posted earlier this year.
A Latitude XT was also visible onstage behind CEO Michael Dell when he addressed an audience at the OpenWorld conference earlier this year. He detailed certain features of the product at the time, but didn't provide a release date.
