iPod Touch Owners Can Add More Apps for a Price
Philip Michaels, Macworld
Just as iPhone users were getting new capabilities via an iPhone software update announced during Steve Jobs' Macworld Expo keynote today, iPod touch users will get new features for their handheld device, too. But unlike the free iPhone update, iPod users will have to pay for their new capabilities, to the tune of a US$19.99 fee.
Here's what you'll get in exchange for the update fee: five new mobile apps that match those already on the iPhone. With the update, the iPhone touch adds Mail, Maps, Stocks, Weather, and Notes features--essentially giving the music player the same capabilities as the iPhone, with the notable exception of calling features.
The Maps feature on the iPod touch will also include the ability to find your current location--another capability added to the iPhone Tuesday. However, the touch's implementation of that feature will rely on Wi-Fi only, and not on the combination of Wi-Fi and cellular tower technology that the iPhone will use.
Finally, the iPod touch update adds a Web Clips feature to create custom icons on the home screen for favorite Web pages as well as the ability to customize the home screen by reordering and adding icons. iPod Touch users will also be able to use the newly introduced iTunes movie rental feature.
The iPod touch software update is available for download via the iTunes Store.
