Apple on Wednesday sent out invitations to select media to attend a special event next Thursday, March 6 at 10:00 am PT, in Cupertino.

On the agenda at the event is the iPhone software roadmap, including the iPhone SDK and "some exciting new enterprise features," according to Apple. No further details were made available.

Apple first unveiled plans to release a software developer kit for the iPhone in October 2007. Steve Jobs said at the time that Apple was not only trying to provide a platform for developers, but also security for its customers.

Consumers have found ways to "jailbreak" there iPhones allowing them to install third-party applications shortly after the iPhone was released last June. There is no telling if the SDK will help this community in its efforts to build apps or simply make it obsolete.
