Hamrick Software on Thursday announced the release of VueScan 8.4.71, an update to its popular scanning software for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. A free update for registered users, VueScan is available in Standard and Professional editions for $39.95 and $79.95 respectively.

VueScan has become a popular alternative for people dissatisfied with the software that comes bundled with their flatbed or film scanners. It's also become an option for users who have scanners whose manufacturers have abandoned the Mac market or have not updated software to stay compatible with recent operating system releases.

Features include the ability to restore color to faded slides and prints, automatic color balance adjustments, IT8 color calibration, batch scanning and PDF output. VueScan supports over 750 scanners in total.

New to the 8.4.71 release -- which actually came out more than a week ago, but is just being announced now -- is the ability to scan multipage documents. Users can scan single-sided or two-sided documents in any page order, with or without an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) in place. VueScan can be configured to re-order and delete pages, then saves them in PDF or TIFF formats.

System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.3 or later.
