Review Lets Designers See App Mockups on Actual Device

Nothing beats checking out your design project on a one-to-one scale. If you're an iOS app designer, there is a simple new way to get your mockups directly onto your iPhone or iPod touch.

A collaboration between independent developer Kevin Kalle and Bohemian Coding has produced Review for iPhone, an app that, when paired with the Review Sync client for Mac, will transfer your app's design mockup from your Mac to the mobile device for--you guessed it--review.

Camera+ Pulled From App Store Over Hidden Feature

Apple has removed Tap Tap Tap's Camera+ app from the App Store for violating its developer agreement. The highly popular photography app--it ranked among the top-selling apps in the photography category--was pulled following the revelation that it contained a hidden workaround allowing the iPhone's volume buttons to be used as physical shutter buttons.

Tap Tap Tap had previously submitted a version that explicitly featured this ability, which it calls VolumeSnap. While a physical shutter button is something that many iPhone owners and photo app developers have wanted, it's a practice that Apple still frowns upon.

Apps Disappear From App Store Amid Hacking Complaints

Some 40 apps from a developer that inexplicably surged up the sales rankings of the App Store have been removed from Apple's online retail outlet, amid complaints from other developers and Web reports of suspicious activity.

Over the weekend, offerings from developer Thuat Nguyen claimed 40 of the 50 slots for top-selling apps in the Books category. Many of the apps were in the top-selling charts despite having few user reviews, according to other developers who first spotted the problem.

G4TV Launches IPhone App, Crashes Under Severe E3 Traffic

The Electronic Entertainment Expo, better known as E3, is underway in Los Angeles and we've already seen some hardware revisions and new products come out from Sony, Microsoft, and of course, Nintendo. As E3 is now largely a media event, there's increased pressure on media sites to provide the latest news.

Gaming network G4 launched a quite comprehensive iPhone app just in time for the start of the big gaming bash, in order to keep you updated on all things gaming including news, reviews, tips, tricks, trailers, and more. You can find out all about any game you've ever wanted to know with screenshots, videos, and reviews in the game library section. If you need help beating end-of-level bosses, there's always the Cheats section, but keep it to yourself--don't want to let people know you've lost your mojo, do you?

Quickoffice Comes to the IPad

Anyone looking forward to using their iPad for work in place of a more traditional notebook may have one more reason to do just that. The mobile productivity company Quickoffice has released Quickoffice Connect Mobile Suite for iPad. This app lets you create, manage, edit, and view documents compatible with Microsoft's Office suite. It also has built in support for multiple online storage services including Dropbox, MobileMe, Google Docs, and Box.net with drag-and-drop file management capability.

While some users of the iPhone app may find it a bit of a downer that they can't upgrade from their current version to the iPad release-not without paying the $10 download fee-the company says Quickoffice Connect Mobile Suite was made with the iPad in mind. This means the app is not a port, but rather that it was built to take advantage of the additional screen space that the iPad provides with an interface the developer dubs SmartTouch.

Fox Soccer App Delivers World Cup News to Your IPhone

Fox Sports Interactive has teamed up with 2ergo and Audi to come up with an iPhone app to tackle the FIFA World Cup kicking off next week in South Africa. For the millions of iPhone-owning soc… I mean football fans around the world, this free app, called Fox Soccer Ticket to Africa, should provide enough information to get you ready for the big event.

While the app won't actually let you watch the games live, it promises to keep you up to date with all the news and information coming out of the World Cup. It has all the match schedules and locations; photos and videos of the matches, players, and fans; post game analysis; and a live score strip. It also promises team and player profiles, live statistics and play-by-play.

Seesmic Releases Long-awaited IPhone Application

After covering just about all the major platforms on both desktop and mobile market, Seesmic has finally arrived for iPhone OS devices. While Seesmic used to be a video-messaging service run by French entrepreneur Loic Le Meur, he's since refocused his company's efforts into making Seesmic the most connected social-networking application around.

Seesmic for iPhone connects you to Twitter, Facebook and of course, Ping.fm which Seesmic bought earlier this year. Ping.fm lets you post updates simultaneously to multiple services, such as Tumblr, LinkedIn, MySpace, Blogger, WordPress, Google Buzz, and dozens of others from just one place. However, it's not possible to see your timelines on those other networks via Ping.fm from within the app.

Qik Video Camera Returns to App Store Under a New Name

We noted last month that Qik's Video Camera app had disappeared form the App Store with little public acknowledgement. After weeks of silence from Qik, the company has reposted its Video Camera app on the App Store--sort of.

Qik Video Camera Pro is actually a completely new app, sporting new and enhanced features. But as a completely new app, everyone who bought the original has to buy the new version to get those new features. (On the upside, because it's not just an update to the original app, you can hang on to that one if you already own it.)

Former IPod Chief Bids Apple Farewell

A great era at Apple has finally come to an end, even as another seems set to begin. According to The New York Times, Tony Fadell--the Apple executive widely regarded as the father of the iPod--is officially leaving the company after more than a year of acting as Steve Jobs's special adviser. The former senior vice president of the iPod Division resigned his executive position in November 2008.

Fadell's eight years at Apple's iPod division--six of which he spent working for now Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein--produced hit after hit. He oversaw the launch of the original, Mac-only, 5GB FireWire iPod all the way up to the unveiling of the tallscreen fourth-generation iPod nano.

Qik Video Camera App Disappears From App Store

The appearance of third-party video-recording iPhone apps from vendors such as Qik was an oasis in the desert to owners of original iPhones such as myself. But in the case of the popular Qik Video Camera, which recently disappeared from the App Store, perhaps the oasis is nothing more than a mirage.

Qik's app was a godsend: it extended the usefulness of both the iPhone and iPhone 3G as well as taking away a significant temptation to upgrade to an iPhone 3GS. I'm sure it stopped me and many others from purchasing--and having to carry around--a separate video camera.
