CIOs the world over who do business with US organisations do so under the shadow of the US Patriot Act.

It has proven a thorn in the side of globalisation; this month members of the European Parliament demanded to know what lawmakers intend to do about the conflict between the European Union's Data Protection Directive and the Patriot Act. The calls come after Microsoft admitted it may be forced to hand over European customers' data on its Cloud service to US authorities and may also be compelled by the Patriot Act to keep details of any such data transfer secret.

New Google Apps Tools Built to Bridge Collaboration Divide

Google has released three new tools as part of its Google Apps suite, designed to increase collaboration in the enterprise.

Continuing its push to productivity and Cloud computing, Google has announced Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office, a plug-in that lets users work together on the same file at the same time in Microsoft Office 2003, 2007 or 2010 on Windows PCs. It has also launched Appsperience, a 90-day trial of Google Apps for businesses and a Collaboration Dashboard, which will enable greater visibility on how Google Apps documents are used within an enterprise via aggregated activity metrics.

Google Wave Slayed by Facebook and Twitter Was it a social network or a collaboration tool on steroids? Nobody could quite agree, and it's one reason for the demise of Google Wave.

The company is disappointed with the user adoption and has announced it will discontinue developing Wave as a stand-alone product.
