VSNL plans to spend US$200 million to build an undersea communications cable system between Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, the Philippines, and potentially Vietnam, the company said late Wednesday.
The new cable highlights the rapidly growing demand for data and telecommunications bandwidth in the region, VSNL said, and provides the first direct fiber link between Singapore and Japan.
The new line, called the TGN-Intra Asia cable system, will be built by Tyco Telecommunications of the U.S. It will provide 3.8T bits of capacity to the countries served, Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (VSNL) said in a statement.
The Bangalore, India company said the new cable will also complete a multi-Terabit system stretching from India to Asia and onward to the U.S. It will connect Singapore directly to VSNL's Transpacific Network in Japan, without any other landing points, and then to VSNL's TGN-Pacific cable system, which links to Guam and the U.S.
VSNL is part of the US$29 billion Tata Group of India. The company operates one of the world's largest global undersea cable networks.
