Autodesk agreed to buy Chinese engineering software developer Hanna Strategies Wednesday, boosting its development of digital prototyping, building information modeling and 2D and 3D software.

The San Rafael, California company already owned a majority stake in Hanna, but the agreement will bring the Shanghai-based company into its fold. Autodesk plans to combine Hanna's development team with its own, the companies said. Hanna owns development centers in Shanghai, Atlanta, Georgia and Pune, India.

Autodesk, which launched the popular AutoCAD engineering software in 1982, said part of the reason for purchasing Hanna was to attract and develop more top engineering students and professionals in China.
