Windows Server 2008 Pricing Told

Microsoft Monday outlined pricing on eight versions of Windows Server 2008 that are slated to ship early next year.

The company said there would be approximately a 1% increase in pricing on the server, which Microsoft is hoping to make available in time for its Feb. 27, 2008 launch event in Los Angeles.

The eight server versions include two editions each of Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter. Microsoft will offer each with or without its Hyper-V virtualization technology.

The company also will have two versions of the server available without Hyper-V that will be focused on specific workloads.

The Web Server 2008 is a single-purpose Web server that is integrated with Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0, ASP.Net, and the Microsoft .Net Framework. The second version is Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems, which is optimized for large databases, line-of-business and custom applications, high availability and will support up to 64 processors.

Microsoft said versions of the server without Hyper-V will be available as 32-bit or 64-bit, with the exception of Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based systems, which will only be available as a 64-bit version.

The Hyper-V feature will only be available with 64-bit editions of Windows Server 2008.

Microsoft also released the pricing list for the server: Windows Server 2008 Standard, $999 (with five Client Access Licenses, or CALs); Standard without Hyper-V, $971 (with five CALs); Enterprise, $3,999 (with 25 CALs); Enterprise without Hyper-V, $3,971 (with 25 CALs); Datacenter, $2,999 (per processor); Datacenter without Hyper-V, $2,971 (per processor); Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems, $2,999 (per processor); and Windows Web Server 2008, $469.
