Nokia on Tuesday announced a new version of its software development kit (SDK) for Java-based mobile gaming at Sun's JavaOne conference.
SNAP Mobile SDK 2.0 will make game development more intuitive, with a new object-oriented API (application programming interface), faster emulation and testing tools, Nokia promised in a statement.
The new API will make it easier for developers to add online community functionality -- including instant messaging, multiplayer gaming and player rankings -- with a new object-oriented API and improved user interface framework.
Fewer API calls to the server should also simplify the daily grind for developers, according to Nokia.
The SDK is free, and can be used to develop games for phones from different vendors, as long as they support Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) 2.0 and Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) 1.1. Together they make up the Java runtime environment.
It is available through download from Forum Nokia.
