Opera is to integrate antiphishing technology from Haute Secure into version 9.5 of the browser, the company has announced, promising its system will outdo those of rivals such as Firefox.
The technology will head off drive-by malware from legitimate websites that have been compromised, as well as from sites known to be distributing malicious code, according to Opera.
The system will allow Opera users to feed malicious-site information back into databases run by Haute or Opera's other antiphishing partners, Netcraft and PhishTank, bolstering the effectiveness of the systems, Opera said.
Opera also gets antiphishing information from Google, which it said is the sole information supplier for the Firefox 3 browser.
Opera's technology will be more precise than that found in Firefox 3, as well, allowing specific hacked pages to be blocked, rather than being limited to blacklisting entire domains.
The company has not yet set a release date for Opera 9.5, but has distributed a release candidate.
Scam malware has become ever more difficult to block, in part because it is increasingly coming from otherwise legitimate websites that have been compromised, according to research released last week by ScanSafe.
The report found that web-based malware from legitimate sites has quadrupled since last year, and now makes up 68 percent of all Internet-based malware.
