Nokia plans to launch a mobile phone based on China's home grown 3G (third-generation) technology standard, TD-SCDMA, in tandem with service provider China Mobile.
Nokia's handset will be launched "very soon" said Wang Jianzhou, chairman and CEO of China Mobile, at the GSMA Mobile Asia Congress in Macau, China.
A dozen handsets, including some from LG Electronics and Samsung, are already available for use with TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) technology, which is only used in China.
The handset to be launched with China Mobile will be Nokia's first based on TD-SCDMA technology.
Wang said he hopes Motorola and other companies will also launch TD-SCDMA-based handsets to increase competition and ensure Chinese consumers find low-priced 3G handsets on the market.
China Mobile is the world's largest mobile service provider with over 436.1 million subscribers.
