Report: Adults Prefer Internet to Sex, TV

A new survey conducted by Harris Interactive and sponsored by Intel, finds that Americans love and need the Internet. In fact, they'd rather go without sex than without their connection.

The survey, conducted last month with 2,119 adults, found other, less attention-grabbing statistics. Titled "Internet Reliance in Today's Economy," it reported that 65 percent of adults feel that "they cannot live without Internet access." Ninety-five percent consider it at least somewhat important to have devices with Internet access. Eighty-seven percent report the Internet has helped them save money. People would give up television and gym memberships before their online fix, the report found.

But those aren't the statistics everyone is talking about. According to the report, 46 percent of women and 30 percent of men would rather go two weeks without sex than without Internet access.

"Men have always faced challenges when it comes to romance" responds Don Clark in his Wall Street Journal blog. "Here's a sign that technology may have raised another hurdle."

But Judy Berman, writing in Salon.com's Broadsheet blog, found the truth behind the hype: "This has nothing to do with women's low libidos, lack of interest in sex or prurient fascination with the World Wide Web. It isn't even about preferring online life to in-the-flesh human contact. It is about how essential the Internet has become to the daily lives of Americans...I certainly wouldn't relish two sexless weeks, either, but if I had to choose between that and knowing the news, earning a living and maintaing [sic] a social life, I'm pretty sure I'd go for the latter. Wouldn't you?"

Other interesting blog posts on the report can be found at Ars Technica and the New York Times.
