NAMM: Steinberg Unveils Cubase 5, IPhone App

Steinberg unveiled the next major version of its digital audio workstation, Cubase, at the NAMM music show in Anaheim, Calif.

Cubase 5 will feature some new tools, including an integrated vocal pitch correction section. The company showed the new technology on during a press conference and it looks very similar to vocal plug-ins Melodyne and Auto-Tune.

The new version will also include new beat creation tools, extended composing features, and a convolution reverb, among other changes.

Cubase 5 will come with a new virtual instrument called LoopMash that allows users to import a variety of loops and then let the instrument create a new groove for you. You can adjust the amount you want to take from each loop and LoopMash will dynamically create a groove.

Pricing for Cubase 5 was not available, but the application will ship in February.

Steinberg also demoed a new iPhone app the company developed to Cubase 5 remotely. Cubase RC (Remote Control) will use Wi-Fi to connect and control Cubase 5.

The app will give you control over the transport, Marker location, and toggling of functions like the Metronome and Cycle Mode.

The iPhone app will be available free from the App Store in the second quarter 2009.
