Shuttle Packs Via's Nano Into Small Desktop PCs

Shuttle XS29Small-PC specialist Shuttle will show off a pair of desktop PCs based on Via Technologies' Nano processor at the Computex exhibition in Taipei next week, the company said Tuesday.

Via, which holds a distant third place in the CPU market behind Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, is winning business from a growing number of hardware companies with its Nano processor line. Samsung Electronics is using the chips in its NC20 laptop and Dell recently announced plans to use the Nano to power a range of home servers.

Shuttle has two Nano-based desktops coming. The first, the XS29, will use a Nano L series processor, while the second, the XS29SF, will use a Nano U chip.

The Nano L series and U series both run at clock speeds from 1GHz to 1.8GHz, but the U series consumes less power. That means the XS29SF does not require a cooling fan to dissipate heat generated by the processor, keeping system noise to a minimum.

Detailed specifications of the systems were not immediately available.
