T-Mobile to Offer Huawei's Android Phone Next Quarter

T-Mobile will release a smartphone running Google's Android operating system in Europe in the late third quarter, the phone's Chinese manufacturer, Huawei Technologies, said Thursday.

Huawei's U8230 will go on sale in Europe in the late third quarter and in China later, a Huawei representative said. It will have a 3.5-inch touchscreen, a 3.2 megapixel camera and a Qualcomm chipset. The battery will offer longer life than any currently available Android phone, Huawei said.

The handset, first announced early this year, will work with the UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System), 3G networks used by operators in Europe and by China Unicom in China, the representative said.

Huawei will also release touchscreen handsets this year that support the two other 3G standards being promoted in China, the company said.

South Korean handset vendor Samsung and Taiwanese PC maker Acer are among other companies that have said they are working on smartphones running Android. Taiwan's High Tech Computer (HTC) became the first company to offer an Android smartphone last year with its G1 in the U.S.
