Amazon Begins Offering Snow Leopard Pre-orders

If there's one thing more fun than ordering software it must be pre-ordering software. We may not have a hard release date for Snow Leopard--during the WWDC keynote, Apple said it would be available some time in September--but that's not about to stop the likes of Amazon, which this weekend began offering pre-orders of the forthcoming Mac OS X release.

Kudos to the retailer, however, for being upfront about both Snow Leopard's availability and its requirements. Notes on the page for both the $29 Snow Leopard single user box and the $59 Snow Leopard Family Pack spell out that Apple has not specified a release date and also mention that the low-price upgrade versions are for current Leopard users only. It also reminds potential customers that Snow Leopard is, indeed, Intel-only, hopefully preventing tears and recriminations later.

Those who are not upgrading from Leopard can still buy Leopard via the updated Mac Box Set, in either individual or family pack flavors for $169 and $229, respectively.

If you find that you can't wait for September, don't worry, Amazon's still got you covered. This lovely paperback edition of Peter Matthiessen's 1978 classic is under $10 and ships immediately.
