Huawei Plans to Launch Multiple Android Devices

Huawei is planning to launch a number of Android-based devices, including smartphones and "home-use Internet devices" at Mobile World Congress, it said on Friday.

The Google-backed platform is nothing new to the Chinese vendor. Huawei has already launched the U8220 or T-Mobile Pulse, which is one of the cheapest Android-based smartphones available.

So far, the company isn't providing any details about the upcoming smartphones, or what a "home-use Internet device" actually is. But Android is expected to make its way onto both netbooks and tablets at Mobile World Congress, according to a research note from CCS Insight.

Android is expected to dominate this year's Mobile World Congress with a plethora of device announcements and more than 50 devices on the show floor, CCS Insight wrote.

But Mobile World Congress isn't just about new devices. Next-generation mobile networks will also play a prominent role on the show floor. Huawei is planning to demonstrate both next-generation LTE (Long-Term Evolution) -- also known as LTE-advanced -- and HSPA+ (High-Speed Packet Access) at theoretical maximum download speeds of 600M bps and 84M bps.

Huawei has become an established infrastructure vendor, according to Mark Newman, chief research officer at Informa Telecoms and Media. However, there is still a perception that it is playing catch-up when it comes to technology innovation, and Huawei wants to show that isn't the case, Newman said.

Mobile World Congress is scheduled to take place from Feb. 15 to 18 in Barcelona.
