AT&T Net Income up on Smartphone Additions

AT&T reported net income of US$4 billion for the second quarter of 2010, up nearly 26 percent from the second quarter of 2009, driven largely by increasing demand for Apple's iPhone and other smartphones, the company said Thursday.

AT&T's wireless division reported a net gain of 1.6 million customers during the quarter, including smartphone and e-reader customers. AT&T now has 90.1 million wireless customers, the company said in a press release.

"We continue to see positive signs of growth in almost every customer segment of our business, especially wireless, which speaks to the quality of our execution and our leadership in the industry's most powerful growth driver -- mobile broadband."

AT&T's wireless data revenue, including messaging and Internet access, increased by $936 million, more than 27 percent, from a year earlier, the company said. Wireless data revenue was $4.4 billion this past quarter.

AT&T's mobile services carried 154 billion text messages during the quarter, up nearly 42 percent from the second quarter of 2009.
