Economist Comes to IPad, IPhone With Audio Features

As promised, The Economist launched its iPhone and iPad apps on Friday morning, along with details about how the news magazine will function on Apple's mobile devices.

The publication will be available for download each Thursday by 4 p.m. Eastern, with the full print edition, and all articles are cached for offline reading. The app also includes the magazine's audio edition, which is read by professional newscasters, so that users can switch between reading and listening.

Current print and online subscribers to the weekly newsmagazine will be able to access The Economist's content for no additional charge. A subscription to the magazine in digital-only format is currently $110 a year in the U.S.; subscriptions and single issues can be purchased within the app. Some content--the magazine's editor's highlights--will be available for free.

The apps are free to download. The Economist on iPad is compatible with devices running iOS 3.2 or later. The iPhone version of the app is compatible with devices running iOS 3.1 or later.
