Email is a great method of communication, but it isn't always the best way to share data. Adobe SendNow makes it easier to share large files with others, and two new updates announced today make it even easier.
Have you ever experienced the joy that is discovering the file you need to share urgently with a customer is too large for the file attachments restrictions on their email server? What's even more fun is taking that file and compressing it into a ZIP file to try and squeeze under the file size limits and still coming in a few kilobytes too large. Been there, done that.
Adobe solves the problem of sending large file attachments.Adobe SendNow resolves the issue of sharing large files by playing middle-man. The file is uploaded to Adobe, and the email that is sent to the other party contains a link that allows them to download the file from there. Adobe SendNow also provides tracking that lets you monitor whether, or how often, a given file has been downloaded.
Adobe is making it even easier to share data with new tools for SendNow. Now, there is a plug-in for Microsoft Outlook, and a tool to convert files to PDF.
The Outlook plug-in is available for Microsoft Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010 running on Windows 7, Vista, or XP. Sorry Mac OS X users--no SendNow plug-in compatible with Outlook on the Apple OS yet.
Once the plug-in is installed, you can configure how Adobe SendNow should work in Outlook. You can set the plug-in to automatically use SendNow for all file attachments, or you can set file size threshold and only automatically use SendNow for larger files.
At the bottom of the SendNow settings are Delivery Options. You can choose to require the recipient to sign-in in order to access files, and you can set the plug-in up to get delivery receipts. Finally, you can specify how many days the file should be available to be downloaded from Adobe SendNow. With the free SendNow service, the maximum is seven days. SendNow subscribers can send larger files and maintain the availability of the download indefinitely.
A post on Adobe's Acrobat blog explains, "Both the Outlook plug-in and one-click Convert to PDF are available now. Convert to PDF is free and is available with both Basic and Plus SendNow subscription levels. The Outlook plug-in is available for free download, and capabilities are linked to subscription levels."
