You can often be too clever for your own britches, as the saying goes. Kensington has taken some of the fuss out of sharing USB-enabled devices among multiple computers by using a set of buttons rather than software drivers and networked equipment. The ShareCentral lets two computers share USB peripherals (from 1 to 5, depending on model) by pressing an A/B button to swap between computers. The computers automatically recognize new USB devices.
The ShareCentral comes in models from 1 switchable device ($40) to 5 ($80). Both computers plug into the hub, and a switch for each peripheral determines which computer it belongs to. A lovely form of low tech for a high-tech problem in offices and homes.
Just remember: eject or unmount that hard drive before flipping its switch! Printers are more forgiving.
