Duration of ownership: 5 Months
Strengths: easy to use interface, no annoying pops like a lot other free antivirus, covers all the security bases with some form of protection, light weight on system resources
Weaknesses: Yesterday I was wondering why my rather fast system (AMD Phenom II 3.1Ghz Calisto with 4Gb of RAM) started slowing down and acting kinda weird, well I do surf some terrible sites sometimes late at night, so I went and uninstalled AVG 8.5 and installed Avira's antivirus/firewall and it found 2 Trojans and 24 pieces of malware and 6 autorun programs that did not show up in my registry, program files or task manager.
Overall Evaluation: If you don't go to any potentially bad websites and don't open mail attachments AVG will probably be all you need, but if you want some real protection for free, try Avira or Avast. otherwise PAY for some REAL protection. I mean come on its "your life" on that computer sitting in front of you. If you've ever lost a hard drive full of Music/Videos/Photos/Business Records that were important to you because a Virus wiped or denied you access to your data, you'll get some real Protection and AVG isn't enough.

Weaknesses: MEMORY HOGG AND SLOWS DOWN THE PC A LOT
Overall Evaluation: Look at the user Reviews Scale, is very poor. I suggest to you all that you Consider Avira but with the understanding that you need to be very familiar with the settings and it is a pain to uninstall. Or you can use AVAST FREE EDITION - which is an amazing Anti Anything with 7 different shields and very easy to understand. Don't take my word for it, I am very surprise that PcWorld left it out. Go to PcMag.com or Cnet.com for a review of both Avira and Avast. But trust me on this you will like AVAST.

Duration of ownership: 3 Years
Strengths: Free, not a resource hog (if you have over 512 MB RAM), finds MOST malware, integrated antivirus/antispyware.
Weaknesses: Just lately have seen 2 trojans get by it, can slow down OLDER pc's, tricky to get the free version.
Overall Evaluation: As an independent pc tech, I've installed this on MANY pc's, and only older pc's, with less than 512MB RAM are slowed down; everything else seems unfettered. Until the "Personal Antivirus", I NEVER saw anything get by AVG 8.5, and even then, the user clicked on the pop-up! By going to free.avg.com, and clicking the correct links, the latest, free version is a slam dunk to download and install, even in Vista. Never expires, seldom annoys you with "buy me" pop-ups. I just move the interface down, so the ads are below the taskbar! The next best security program is Windows Live OneCare, but usually costs something (even after ubiquitous rebates), and definitely slows normal operations. AVG 8.5 is still a winner, from my professional perspective, apart from enterprise-wide security apps (of which I have yet to settle on).
