Editorial Review of ZipitFast Pro

When you need to squeeze that large file through someone's e-mail server or save some coveted hard-drive space, a compression utility is your go-to program. The free ZipItFast Pro lets you create and manage compressed files. It has more features than its other free competitors, ZipCentral and FreeZip, such as password protection and options for the level of compression you need. Although Windows XP has a compression utility built-in, ZipItFast Pro includes the ability to manage the files within archives and create many types of archives.

ZipItFast Pro's drag-and-drop capabilities are indispensable, yet expected in this software age. The ability to make self-extracting archive (.exe) files is truly helpful. But the interface remains cluttered and truly difficult to read, coming off as more cool than useful. (Additional skins are available for free download.) Another thing I found annoying: The folder that comes up by default when opening an archive within ZipItFast Pro is the C drive's WINDOWS folder when it should be updated to My Documents.

Note: The license agreement for this product is minimal. It says the program will update your search button in Internet Explorer. However, I saw no such change. In addition, we carefully checked for viruses using Symantec AntiVirus in response to a user review posted October 11, 2006. We found no viruses before or after installing ZipItFast Pro.
