Editorial Review of QuickTime Player
QuickTime Player is to Apple as Windows Media Player is to Microsoft. It's Apple's standard video format, and if you have iTunes on your computer, you already have QuickTime Player. It works hand-in-hand with iTunes, playing back video from the iTunes Store within iTunes. But QuickTime is also a fine program on its own merit, smoothly playing back video in many formats, including the high-definition standard H.264.
The free version I looked at can't create H.264 video, record audio for podcasts, create movies for iPods, use full-screen controls, or convert media from one format to another. The Pro version gives you all that.
Regular video playback looked very good, and much better than when viewing video in iTunes. The screen resized fairly smoothly, only dropping a few frames. But H.264 playback was gorgeous -- the HD Gallery on showcases some amazing-looking video along with more movie trailers than you'll ever want to see. QuickTime Player also touts 24 channels of surround-sound support and new playback controls among this version's benefits.
The QuickTime Guide that pops up upon launch is close to useless, except for advertising iTunes Store offerings. Links to iTunes only gave me an error in my browser. Download QuickTime Player for playback, not for discovering new content.
Note: If you've previously purchased QuickTime Pro 5 or 6 and you install QuickTime 7 Player, the Pro functionality in those older versions will be disabled. To regain Pro functionality, you must buy a new QuickTime Pro 7 key from Apple. Apple makes this clear in its Read Me file and the End-User License Agreement. Be warned.
