Editorial Review of TopStyle Pro

One of the major innovations in Web coding is the development of Cascading Style Sheets, or CSS, which allow Web designers to specify the appearance of functional elements such as emphasis, headers, links, and more. Designing, editing, and testing CSS can be a difficult process. TopStyle...well, doesn't make it easy, but makes it a lot easier.

Although TopStyle does include a preview display, it is not a WYSIWYG editor. Rather, it is a powerful text editor designed for people who know how to code style sheets and want tools to make their job easier, reduce errors, and let them speed up the edit-test-debug cycle. It's aimed squarely at professionals, not dabblers, and assumes a certain level of knowledge. This also means it's not stripped down or limited; it has a lot of power under the hood. (This review was done with all features and options turned on; it is possible to strip down the interface to just the most common items.)

TopStyle has many nice features to make a developer's life easier. For example, there is a color picker which produces the hex code for a given color. That's pretty much boilerplate, but it also includes a palette of harmonious colors to let you easily create an effective, balanced, color scheme for your design. As you select elements in the editor (for example, H1), all the possible properties are displayed in a list to the right (the list can be moved, of course), and edits made in that list are quickly reflected in the main editor. The reverse is also true--edit the text, and the property list updates.

TopStyle is a focused program, but a well done one. Anyone who edits or creates Cascading Style Sheets would do well to download the full-featured trial to determine if this program should be part of their toolbox.

Description of TopStyle Pro

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) simplify the act of making global changes across your Web site, but different browsers implement them in different ways. TopStyle Pro enables you to create consistent, easy-to-maintain Web sites in a fraction of the time it would take using a traditional HTML editor. It enables you to define combinations of colors, fonts, margins, borders, and all the key attributes that can be assigned to HTML tags. You can use the built-in preview function to view your work as you build classes of styles, or you can view your pages in any Web browser. TopStyle Pro also integrates with popular HTML editors such as HomeSite, ColdFusion Studio, Microsoft FrontPage, Macromedia Dreamweaver, and a dozen other HTML-building tools.

TopStyle Pro solves the problem of inconsistent browser interpretations by flagging errors in your style sheets, and its built-in style checker keeps track of each browser's imperfections, version by version. The program will tell you if you've created style sheets that will be misinterpreted by a particular version of Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Opera, and it enables you to implement workarounds.
