Editorial Review of Single Click Filing for Outlook

Note: This review addresses v1.1 of the software.

I know that sorting my Outlook e-mail into folders will keep my inbox neat and tidy. But I don't use my folders nearly as often as I should. It's not that sorting messages is hard or even all that time consuming; it's just that Outlook's process for doing so is not as streamlined as it could be.

That's where Caelo Software's Single Click Filing for Outlook comes in. This $5 utility lives up to its name, allowing you to file multiple messages into your Outlook folders with a single click of the mouse.

Single Click Filing works best with the 2003 and 2007 versions of Outlook. (A dedicated version for Outlook 2010 is expected soon; until that's ready, Outlook 2010 users may find the utility a bit harder to use.) It lets you place shortcuts to your Outlook folders in a toolbar that appears across the top of your Outlook window. Unfortunately, you can't use Single Click Filing to create new folders; you can only add folders that you've already created. You can, however, change the name of the folder that displays in the Single Click Filing toolbar.

You can add up to 10 folder shortcuts. Once they're added, you simply highlight the messages you'd like to store in the folder, and click the folder shortcut. That's it: your messages are automatically transferred to the folder. It's so simple, it's a wonder Microsoft hasn't thought of this itself.

Single Click Filing for Outlook serves the single purpose of filing your messages. You can't access your folders by clicking on buttons it adds to your Outlook window--something I kept trying to do before I got the hang of it. But what it does, it does very well.
