    Duration of ownership: 5 Years

Strengths: I have used WinUAE over a number of revisions to run virtual Amiga sessions on my PCs with excellent results. Lately I've turned to the Amiga Forever commercial product, which not only bundles a set of legal, software-based ROM kernels with WinUAE, but also adds a nice Windows-based user inteface to launch the sessions and includes a sizable set of videos, Amiga games and some application software including a paint program, web browser and more, as well as Amiga DVD/CD-ROM and diskette access drivers.

Weaknesses: Useless without an Amiga ROM kit. However, if you do have a ROM, or more accurately an image of it, WinUAE works very well. If not go with one of the bundled solutions, such as Amiga Forever. AF is solid and well supported.

Overall Evaluation: When I had Amiga computers, I emulated Wintel machines and Macintoshes in software and hardware. Now ,the tables are turned. Remarkably, in some ways the Amiga emulation under Windows works better than Windows. The Amiga OS and interface are slightly quaint but the user community continues updating the look and feel with new icon sets, fonts, etc. WinUAE mulation takes full advantage of the Amiga's remarkably lean and efficient OS to do some truly amazing things without really tasking your modern Windows-based PC. It's a virtual machine that screams while it runs inside your Win environment. If you owned an Amiga and want to keep your software in use, this is the way to go as Amiga hardware availability dwindles. I should also note that there are a number of Amiga software resources on the web where you can obtain now free and legal copies of what was once cutting-edge commercial software.
