Editorial Review of TextPad

If you work directly with code--whether in programs or in HTML or XML docs-you'll find TextPad indispensable. It's a powerful text editor with many useful features, including easy-access Macro and Search tools, a spelling checker, a file manager, a Java compiler, and inline bookmarks.

The well-designed interface includes a Clip Library window that gives you easy access to copied items as well as ANSI character codes, HTML tags, and other useful coding shortcuts. The Document Selector window lets you simply click on a file name to switch to it. Other interface options include Document Tabs, Line Numbers, a variety of toolbars, and more.

TextPad is completely customizable, with a Configure menu that lets you tweak every aspect of the program, from the general interface to spelling tools, to Java applets. You can save files as text, HTML, Java, C/C++, and Clip Library; choose PC, Mac, or UNIX file formats; and select from a variety of encoding options. The free trial is good for 30 days; the registration fee is $29.
