Description of Search and Replace for Windows v4.8
The search functionality in Windows Explorer is basic--oftentimes infuriatingly so. The Search and Replace utility is a good way to boost your searching ability and, better still, it doesn't require a lot of technical know-how.
Like Explorer, Search and Replace lets you search for text within files, although it extends this functionality by searching files in zipped archives, as well. But the utility's forte is performing advanced search and replace operations by using regular expressions, which are patterns within your data. For instance, have you ever copied a Web page into Word and wanted to eliminate its line breaks so the text wraps in your window? Any search and replace can eliminate line breaks, but you'll need a regular expression if you want to eliminate line breaks and preserve paragraph formatting.
Search and Replace really shines, however, when you're not sure what files you're looking for. You can conduct "anything but" searches; you can use masks and filters based on date and size; and you can use the program's script editor to conduct multistep search and replace operations. Finally, the program's "HTML Mode" generates HTML character code from plain text.
