Editorial Review of Jv16 Power Tools 2006

There is a newer version of this download. Please visit PC World's review to download the latest version of the software. While many of the programs we offer for download have only a single purpose, others are more general purpose tools. JV16 Power Tools 2006 is just such a program, offering a variety of tools for working with the innards of your Windows 98 or later version operating system and software.

The program can find, securely delete and organize your files, wipe your disks (so that nobody can get your data if you are selling or donating a computer) and delete your cookies and Web caches. It also offers a number of tools for working with the Windows Registry (where Windows stores the settings that tell it how to run the computer), cleaning out unnecessary entries, finding and editing entries and helping to manage the Registry.

While it is much easier to use than the Regedit tool that's built into Windows, it should be used with caution; it's easy to make your computer unusable if you don't know what you are doing. Fortunately, JV16 Power Tools 2006 also includes the ability to take snapshots of the Registry, backup copies that can be used to restore it if you (or a rogue program) do anything untoward that damages it.
