Description of California Anti-Spam Law
This legislation, signed into law by Gov. Gray Davis on September 23, 2003, is one of the toughest anti-spam laws in the nation. It takes an "opt-in" approach against unwanted e-mail, requiring senders to obtain the recipient's permission before sending commercial e-mail to a California e-mail address. Violators may be fined up to $1000 for each message to an individual and up to $1 million for each e-mail advertisement sent out. The law is set to take effect January 1, 2004.
