Editorial Review of Thunderbird

Not happy with Outlook's steep price? Underwhelmed with Outlook Express? Give Thunderbird a look. This free e-mail client--from the same folks who bring you Firefox--is straightforward and simple to use. It's also packed with the high-end features you'd expect from a top piece of e-mail software, including the ability to encrypt messages, digitally sign messages, create filters so mail can be automatically handled when it's received, and more.

Setup is simple; if you already have e-mail software, Thunderbird will import your existing settings. Creating a new account is similarly easy, and it even includes easy setup screens for Gmail, which can be difficult to set up with e-mail clients.

It's not an all-around personal information manager like Outlook--there's no calendar, for example, and you can't create to-do lists. But if all you want is e-mail, it's a winner. It will even handle RSS feeds and newsgroups, so you can keep up on the latest blogs, news, and discussion areas. Considering that it's free, if you're not happy with your current e-mail software, Thunderbird is well worth the download.
