Editorial Review of SyncBackSE

SyncBackSE is a handy backup and folder synchronization utility. However, it does suffer from some conceptual misdirection (e.g., calling backup jobs profiles) and an interface that seems to be trying to please everyone (there are three separate ways to invoke many main screen commands). Odd as the GUI may seem at times, it's still easy to define jobs and I loved the right/left metaphor for the source and destination locations. Great pains are taken to distinguish between backup and synching--nice safeguard since the latter can destroy data if not used correctly. The program backs up via FTP as well as to hard drives, does plain file copying or compresses to zip with encryption, and can be run as a U3 or portable thumb drive application.

Alas, the price seems a bit steep for a program that won't back up to optical media and has an often awkward interface. Unless you're an IT type who appreciates such features as compressed email logs and the ability to move as well as copy files, you'll probably be better served by 2BrightSpark's free SyncBack 3, which offers most of the same consumer-level functionality.
