Editor's Review of BitTorrent
The widely used BitTorrent peer-to-peer sharing network gives you cheap file distribution for large files, and now also includes a store for paid, legal video downloads. This client software is one of many BitTorrent clients. If you're just getting started in the BitTorrent universe, you'll find BitTorrent 5 basic and easy to use. And because it's free, you can always graduate to another client later.
The major improvements in version 5 include a completely new user interface and a torrent (download item) priority system. Download progress bars are color-coded so you can understand what's happening with your downloading torrent, and for additional information, new "piece bars" show you which pieces of the torrent have been downloaded.
Slashdot.org called the BitTorrent network "P2P with brains" because its users upload files at the same time they download, so more network bandwidth is available for more popular files. Also, your download speed will be faster if you upload popular files as well as download.
Note: The history of BitTorrent (and most other peer-to-peer sharing networks has been fraught with legal battles, so be aware of what you are downloading (Is it legal? Is it safe?) and check your computer for spyware and viruses often to avoid catching a bug. As for the legal video-download service, check out PC World editor Harry McCracken's assessment.
