Description of World Wind

World Wind is NASA's most ambitious software project to date. This global information system pulls together a high resolution map of the entire world and layers into it satellite information from a variety of sources. The program's Web page says that World Wind lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth, leveraging high resolution LandSat imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) elevation data to experience Earth terrain (or any planet with the data) in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there. Virtually visit any place in the world. Look across the Andes, into the Grand Canyon, over the Alps or along the African Sahara.

  Duration of ownership: 1 Days

  Strengths: It installs just fine for me. I have a two year old eMachines W3503, with an extra 1GB RAM and GeForce 8500GT video card.

  Weaknesses: Maybe it's just my ignorance, but I couldn't find any way to get half the zoom that Google Earth is capable of.

  Overall Evaluation: It's ok, but I much prefer Google Earth.

  Strengths: Much clearer and closer views worldwide. Many more features, and the ability to look closeup at planets and stars as well as everywhere on earth (as opposed to google earth)

  Weaknesses: Alot of disc space required as well as CPU usage and have to install NET framework.

  Overall Evaluation: For all of the prior evaluations, you obviously have outdated PC's or are just newbies. This product is far superior to any google progs Ive used and it installed fine for me. PS check the requirements to run it and BTW, take a computer course.

  Weaknesses: Pull it already. Doesn't anyone at PC World listen ? It won't even load. What else did this attempted load mess up on my computer ?

  Overall Evaluation: When I tried to install it the application generated an exception that couldn't be handled. Message read: "Process id=0x1a0 (416), Thread id=0xaf4 (2804)."
