Editor's Review of GameGain
Everyone wants to squeeze out extra performance for gaming. Even a few additional frames-per-second can help a player in competitive online gaming or make single player games smoother and more enjoyable. Buying new hardware is one way to do this; laboriously tweaking system settings by hand is another. A third way is to run GameGain, push a single button, and enjoy the results.
The program is very much a black box. It promises to change a wide range of system settings in order to optimize your machine for gameplay. It does not provide any list of settings tweaked or any kind of user configuration. It has only two options: "Fast" and "Fastest", the latter requiring the purchase of the software.
I tested it using Sony's Vanguard, currently the biggest performance hog on my system. While Massively Multiplayer Online Game performance is subject to a wide range of variables, over extended playtime, I did notice a slight average increase in my frame rate after running GameGain. At the least, it did no harm, and if its effects are subtle, well, it's also free. Even so, since it is changing a lot of system settings with no input from the user, it would be wise to make a system restore point before running the program--just in case.
